Wolf Awareness Week at Wolf Howl Animal Preserve
Wolf Howl Animal Preserve celebrated National Wolf Awareness week by sponsoring a contest. The judging took place on October 17, 2004. There were 4 different age groups and prize categories. Our goal in sponsoring this contest was to educate and make aware the importance of the Wolf as a great predator in our ecosystem. We also wished to dispel some of the myths and bad press that the Wolf has received in the past and present. Our young people need to understand that the earth and its wildlife pay a crucial part in the survival of mankind. Unfortunately, we only had Adults submit entries, even though the invitation to participate was extended to schools. We will change our strategy for next year year's contest with a goal of reaching children.
We would once again like to congratulate our Winner, Ms. Rena Newcomb, a Respiratory Therapist from Renzi, Mississippi. Her winning entry, entitled "Wolves in the Wild", encompassed all of the factors that we were looking for. Rena chose the Mountain shirt "Wolf in Blue Foliage" as her prize. Her winning entry is displayed on our website and at the Preserve.
Honorable mentions went to Ms. Lynne Kaiser of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for her graphic design entry. Mr. Christopher O'Connor of the United Kingdom also received a mention for his graphic design submission. We have also recognized Ms. Julie Wesson from Wilton, Wisconsin for a story that she wrote for our contest.
Congratulations, hugs and dens full of Thanks to all of you who submitted an entry. I did not envy the judges having to pick from so many wonderful entries. Let us strive to continue our work of Wolf education throughout our lives.
