Last Red Wolf leaves Racine Zoo - by Maria Ferguson
Juliet Paradowski, Curator of Conservation and Animal Welfare/Registrar of the Racine Zoological Gardens, informed me that the last Red Wolf left the Racine Zoo in April of 2004. Ms. Paradowski says they are renovating the exhibit, which the Red Wolves inhabited, for Andean Bears.
Ms. Paradowski reported that the female went to the Chaffee Zoo in Fresno, California for breeding. Chaffee Zoo is one of 33 zoos and nature centers in 21 states and the District of Columbia now cooperating in a national breeding program in efforts to restore red wolves. Ms. Paradowski could not remember the names of the facilities that the other two male Wolves went to, but reported that one facility was in Minnesota and the other in Missouri. She also was not sure if the breeding was for reintroduction. I am currently contacting both the Chaffee Zoo and the Red Wolf SSP Coordinator, Will Waddell, for more information.
