Group Swiss Wolf filed a petition Tuesday in Berne for the Protection of wolves on Swiss territory. The 25,000 signatories demand that Switzerland does not withdraw from the Berne Convention, which guarantees the conservation of wildlife in Europe.
The initials were combined in about three months, on Wednesday stressed Wolf Group Switzerland, Pro Natura, the Swiss Animal Protection and Mountain Wilderness in a joint statement. Even in districts inhabited by the wolf or the Valais, Grisons and Ticino, several hundred signatures were collected.
Currently, as the concept of the federal wolf, an animal may be shot if he has killed at least 25 sheep in one month or 35 in four months. Hunting wolves for population control, however, is prohibited.
In France and Italy, wolves have formed packs five years after their first appearance. In Switzerland, where a wolf was killed "almost every year", the canine is present for 15 years without mating, says David Gerke, president of Wolf Group. Therefore, there is currently no reason to repeal its protection.
The authors of the statement, the model of grazing sheep the most widespread, free and unprotected, is neither green nor the criteria for the protection of animals. They reiterated that the 10,000 sheep that die each year in the Alps, only a hundred are killed by wolves.
