I have always been taught the first thing to remember when taking care of any animal is to talk to them.  Animals shoudl be treated more as beings and less as possessions.  When I used to volunteer at a wolf preserve, I was always told that the animals respond best to you when you talk with them.  Treat them as equals and stop trying to be such a dominator.  It doesn't get you very far, and if it does, the animal is working off of fear training.  Scared  Not too cool.

Alot of people think  of animals as just animals with no feelings -like "they don't feel pain they are just an animal" or "that dumb dog doesn't know what you are talking about he's just a dog". Boy are they ever wrong they know exactly what you are talking about  and they do feel pain and they are excellent judges of character. I would rather be around animals then alot of people that I know and that in itself is so sad.Sad
