I'm sure most of you are aware of the Wolves of Isle Royale, Michigan and how years of inbreeding due to the fact that they are cut off from the mainland, have caused them to deteriorate, become infertile and die off. There were only 2 non-mating Wolves left on the island.
The National Park Service decided to replenish the pack to help control the Moose population who would have decimated the island and eventually died off themselves. 2 Wolves from Minnesota, a 4 year old female and a 5 year old male were relocated onto two different spots on the island. The plan is to relocate 20-30 wolves from Minnesota over the next 3 to 5 years. By the end of this fall the Park Service plans to relocate up to 6 Wolves to the Island.
Hopefully they will pair bond and repopulate the island with a healthy population of wolves that will flourish for years to come.
