Sustaining a recovery that evokes both wonderment and concern, the Wisconsin population of gray wolves has reached a modern-era record of about 825 animals in over 200 packs, according to state biologists.

The estimate was tallied Friday at the annual Wisconsin Wolf Stakeholder Committee meeting in Wausau.

The official population range was listed as 801 to 858 wolves.

Notable in the latest assessment: Several packs of 10 or more wolves were recorded, including a pack of 12 in Douglas County.

The increase from 2009-10 to 2010-11 is the largest on record.

The animals have shown substantial increases in both population and range over the last decade, said Wydeven, and are proving capable of exploiting habitats not previously thought suitable for the species.

"No one would have predicted 20 years ago that we’d have wolves in northern Waupaca County," Wydeven said. "But we’re learning more each year."

Maybe if we stopped killing them, we'd learn even more. Watching from the sidelines
