Wolf Howl Animal Preserve’s Wolves in spring – by Maria Ferguson

female wolf pictureThe Wolves had their first really hot day today.  Temperatures hit the high 80’s by early this afternoon.  The weather has been very strange this spring.  Thankfully, it has been cooler until today.  We’ve had tons of rain and lots of flooding in the area.  Thankfully, the Wolves have been using their new den to escape the moisture.  Escaping the aftermath of mud and puddles is another story for Wolves and caretakers alike.  I planted perennial rye grass twice in the main enclosure in early spring.  I’m happy to report that 1/3 of their enclosure is now green. Their enclosure is on a hill and when it rains in Mississippi it pours, everything gets washed downhill.   I can’t seem to get any grass to grow on the east side of their enclosure because of the hard rains and sandy soil I used to fill in deep holes that they dug out.  I’ll keep trying; hopefully the areas that do have grass will hold the seed.

femal wolf photoAll Wolves are pretty much done with blowing their undercoats accept for Niko Akni, he’s about half way there.  He seeks shelter from the afternoon sun in the den.  Everyone else is looking pretty lean and mean.  The boys love for me to pick off the fur where the girls prefer to rub it off against the fence, trees and the ground.  Waya has been the biggest cuddle bug lately.  Him and Niko Akni just vie for my attention.

Their appetites are slowing down because of the warmer weather and I’ll have to implement more non-feed days to stimulate it.  This is always a tricky time of year figuring out just how much they will eat.  You hate to waste food with the price of it these days.

Nothing much else is going on with them.  I took a few pictures* of them for you today and will let you enjoy them.
