White-tailed Deer
The White-tailed Deer is a small to medium sized deer. The males are much heavier than the females. Their coats are reddish brown in summer turning a deeper brown in winter. Deer in northern climates turn almost gray in winter. Fawns are reddish orange, with many white spots. Deer can run up to speeds of 35mph and jump over 8-foot tall objects. They can leap over 30 feet. They communicate danger by snorting. Breeding season in the south extends from January to March. In the North breeding season is in November. The gestation period is 6 months. 1-3 fawns are born to a doe. The first mating usually resulting in the birth of 1 fawn and subsequent matings in multiple births. This young buck was romping in Wolf Howl Animal Preserves field with a doe. By the time I retrieved my camera, the doe disappeared into the honeysuckle along the creek. The White-tailed Deer prefers habitat of mixed woods and fields with a nearby water source. They are active both day and night. Photo by Maria Ferguson.
