Hummingbird

Hummingbird

This Ruby-Throated Hummingbird was Wolf Howls first nectar loving visitor this year. This is a male. You can identify a mature male by its red throat. Hummingbirds prefer to live in secluded gardens, parks and woods. They very rarely are still except for briefly sitting on a branch or twig to survey its surroundings. They are very tiny and have a needle-like bill. Their bill is used to suck nectar from flowers such as salvia, trumpet creeper, petunia and thistle. They are also attracted to red feeders holding nectar made from 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Picture by Maria Ferguson
