The puppies, who have low immune systems because they were taken from their mother too early, caught an infection last week and have been in and out of the vet’s office. Medical expenses so far total more than $7,000, and will probably reach more than $10,000.
“We rescued the puppies even though we had no idea where to put them,” said Mark Scarola, member of the sanctuary’s board of directors. “Now, we’re trying to rescue them again by making sure they survive.”

"We got a call from the vet saying 'Please come and get them – they are destroying the place,' " said Deanna Deppen, vice president of the sanctuary. "But that's always a great sign with wolf pups."
Annual expenses have now exceeded $100,000 and continue to rise. The sanctuary is 100% volunteer run and all money goes to the animals and the educational programs.
Becuase they see the devastation of neglected pets firsthand, the sanctuary also stresses the commitment it takes to own an animal. Too many of the sanctuary's residents were once pets, then abandoned.
"Owning an animal means making a promise," Smith said.
