Eyes of the Wolf

Through the dark and frosty Alaskan night
While the shimmering aurora twirled or' head
My eyes beheld a haunting sight
That filled my soul with fear and dread.

Through the misty fog and drifting snow
Were bright and glowing eyes I see
Perhaps a ghostly image though,
Of a restless spirit inside of me.

These amber eyes were fixed on mine
And unyielding in the gaze,
I sought to run and not look behind,
Yet I stood tranquil amidst the haze.

Were these merely eyes staring back at me?
Or the essence of Alaska's wild?
The likeness of all that still roam free;
I could do naught but stand and smile.

As I looked at the image in the new fallen snow
Of the colors dancing in the soft velvet sky
Pink and purple, and red all aglow
My companion dashed off in the blink of an eye.

With one brief glance the image was gone
Into the shadows he vanished from sight
Howling his haunting farewell song
And leaving me breathless there in the night.

Many days and nights have passed me by
Since I saw his breath in the cold night air.
The eyes of the wolf emblazoned forever;
Unmoving through time with an endless stare.
